Justice Centre Hong Kong - compassion for displaced persons
Hong Kong has a proud history of treating refugees and displaced people with compassion. Charitable Choice partner charity Justice Centre Hong Kong has been providing support to refugees, asylum seekers and other forced migrants in Hong Kong for the past 16 years. Thank you Lynette Nam and the Justice Centre Hong Kong team for hosting me at your office and for all the wonderful work you do to support this vulnerable community.
What I learned
- There are close to 14,000 people from 50 countries seeking asylum in or via Hong Kong (US and Canada are the main resettlement locations for the 0.4% of cases that succeed).
- There are many reasons that displaced people end up in HK including being victims of torture, forced labour and human trafficking.
- These displaced individuals ask the Hong Kong Government to provide protection under Hong Kong law from the torture, persecution and other risks they face in their countries of origin and/or as a result of their migration.
What they do
- Justice Centre Hong Kong receives inquiries from over 350 families each year.
- Services provided include access to legal advice, social welfare and counselling.
- The charity also offers training to legal professionals as well as a Young Advocates education programme for high school students to learn more about this global issue.
What they need
- Donations to support their valuable work!
$60 helps pay for transport to and from meetings with counsellors
$200 helps fund a counselling session for a survivor of torture
$500 gives a child legal support for asylum proceedings
- Legal Assistants to join their team. More info here.
- For teenagers interested to pursue a legal career, sign up for the Young Advocates Spring & Summer 2025 program - now open here.
