Changing Young Lives - enriching lives of underprivileged children

My last Charitable Choice charity visit for 2023 was to Changing Young Lives Foundation to meet with Executive Director Caribbean Chan. Their newly renovated centre at Pak Tin Estate is welcoming for service users and volunteers alike.

What I learned
  • The charity has 1000 active members, 25 staff including full time teachers and social workers.
  • They conduct 150 service sessions every week yet demand is high and there is a long waiting list of underprivileged students needing academic and English support.

What the charity does
Provide much-needed academic support and enrichment opportunities for hundreds of underprivileged children in the Sham Shui Po area as well as to the wider community via their outreach programs at local schools.

What they need
1. Homework support volunteers daily 3:30-7:30pm. English/Chinese/all subjects.
2. Corporate or student groups to lead Friday afternoon fun English enrichment activities.
3. NetPals - English speaking teens to tutor primary school aged students online.
4. Leadership scholarship sponsors at $10,000/student/year.
5. Funding to hire a therapist to support mental well-being for their service users (approx $600K).
