HK Dolphin Conservation Society - saving our dolphins from extinction

I learned a great deal about the Hong Kong pink dolphins at my meeting with Charitable Choice beneficiary charity Hong Kong Dolphin Conservation Society's Viena Hei Man Mak recently. Established in 2003, HKDCS is solely dedicated to the conservation of marine mammals in Hong Kong. They are a small charity but they pack a punch in marine conservation!

What I learned

  • Hong Kong is an important habitat for the Chinese white dolphin aka "pink dolphins" who come to feed and nurse their calves here
  • There has been an 80% decline in population in the past 20 years!
  • Hong Kong's marine habitat has been harmed by overfishing, water pollution, heavy marine traffic and large construction projects

What they do

  • HKDCS serves as a voice for the pink dolphins and finless porpoises that call Hong Kong home
  • Conduct research, collect data and provide public education activities on these local species
  • Offer public, private & corporate boat trips to visit dolphin habitats and collect data
  • Provide school talks and monthly workshops at the Science Museum

What they need

  • Sponsor for their school talks and boat trips (approx. $10,000)
  • Join a dolphin research trip https://lnkd.in/g23n9T6q
  • For the public to be aware of the 5 step correct code of conduct when dolphin watching:

1. Think twice - about which speedboat company you book. Are they ethical?
2. Watch out - bring binoculars
3. Slow down - when you are a few hundred metres away
4. Stop - don't get too close, let the dolphins approach you
5. Leave slowly

Please consider supporting Hong Kong Dolphin Conservation Society and saving the pink dolphins. Contact Viena Hei Man Mak if you're interested in a boat trip. Make a one off or monthly donation here.
